Abstract

Contrary to the prevailing narrative of East Asian immunity to the recent surge of anti-establishment, populist politics across the West, Vickers argues that populist nationalism is already a feature of the establishment across much of East Asia. Vickers examines the politics of China, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea and finds that many of the challenges to the status quo in Europe and the United States are integral to governance in East Asia.
