Rhetorics of Identity: The Debate over Division of the North-West Territories, 1890–1905

The attempt by Territorial Premier F.W.G. Haultain to bring about the creation of “one big province’ out of the then North-West Territories before 1905 foundered on the competing identities of locality and nation, whose rhetorics proved powerful enough to deny him the necessary consensus behind his own concept of a Western regional identity.

L’effort qu’a fait le premier ministre territorial F.W.G. Hauhain pour transformer les Territoires du Nord-Ouest de l’époque en “une seule et grande province” avant 1905 a échoué en raison du conflit opposant la région à la nation comme identités séparées dont la rhétorique s’est avérée assez puissante pour lui refuser le consensus indispensable à la réalisation de son propre concept d’une identité régionale occidentale.
