Dependent Motorization: Canada and the Automobile to the 1930s

This essay addresses two aspects of the motorization of Canada between the 1890s and the 1930s: the construction of a domestic automobile industry and of a modern highway system. Both were heavily influenced – to the point of dependency – by American money and technology. American dominance of the Canadian automobile industry (achieved by 1919) is explained by Canadian technological backwardness and the cultural values of indigenous entrepreneurs. It is also argued that American manufacturers and motorists accelerated the motorization of Canadian society, the former through their price cuts, the latter through tourism.

Le présent texte traite de deux aspects de la motorisation du Canada des années 1890 aux années 1930: la construction d’une industrie automobile du pays et d’un système moderne de voies publiques. Les deux ont été fortement influencés, au point de l’annexe, par la monnaie et la technologie américaines. La domination américaine de l’industrie automobile canadienne (réalisée dès 1919) s’explique par l’arriération technologique canadienne et les valeurs culturelles d’entrepreneurs indigènes. L’auteur maintient en plus que des fabricants et des automobilistes américains ont accéléré la motorisation de la société canadienne, ceux-là par leurs réductions de prix et ceux-ci par le tourisme.
