Abstract

Abstract:

In the nineteenth century, through Frédéric Le Play and his school. French-Canadian intellectuals came in contact with “social science” just as it was emerging as a science based on observation. They were attracted more by Le Play’s doctrines than by his methodology. This chapter in our intellectual history has been too exclusively associated with Léon Gérin’s name. The Le Play movement was known in French Canada long before he discovered it and its influence grew, at least partly, without him. But it took a long time before concrete results were achieved.
