The Life of George Copway or Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh (1818–1869) — and a review of his writings

George Copway (1818–1869), the Canadian Indian author, became Canada’s first literary celebrity in the United States. From 1847 to 1851 the Ojibwa from Rice Lake, Canada West (today’s Ontario), completed four books in the United States and briefly edited his own weekly newspaper in New York City. A biographical study of this writer and lecturer reveals the life story of an unusual nineteenth-century Indian who, as a noble Christian convert, gained and subsequently lost a large American audience. Secondly, it raises the important question of the historical reliability of his published work about himself and the Ojibwa Indians.

Entre 1847 et 1851 l’Ojibwa de Rice Lake dans le Canada-Ouest (l’Ontario d’aujourd’hui) acheva quatre livres aux Etats-Unis et dirigea pendant un temps très court dans la ville de New York son propre journal hebdomadaire. Une étude biographique de cet écrivain et conférencier révèle l’histoire de la vie d’un Indien exceptionnel du dix-neuvième siècle lequel, en tant que noble converti chrétien, gagna un public américain important pour le perdre ensuite. L’étude soulève, deuxièmement, la question importante du sérieux historique de ses écrits publiés concernant lui-même et les Indiens ojibwa.
