In Search of a Prairie Myth: A Survey of the Intellectual and Cultural Historiography of Prairie Canada

This historiographical article examines what has been done and suggests topics that still need to be done in the study of the intellectual and cultural history of prairie Canada. It divides the literature into four themes — regional identity, protest, social reform, and imagery — and surveys the major books and articles in each theme that have made a contribution to the field. The article deals with both standard books in the field and works not necessarily defined as intellectual or cultural history but which nevertheless offer insight into the subject by discussing some aspect of the political or social ideas or culture, and thus contribute to the study of prairie intellectual or cultural history.

Le texte historiographique qui suit examine ce qu’on a accompli dans les recherches sur l’histoire intellectuelle et culturelle des Prairies du Canada et ce qui reste toujours à faire. La littérature y est divisée en quatre thèmes; identité régionale, protestation, réforme sociale et images, et passe en revue les livres et les articles les plus importants de chaque thème qui ont contribué à ce domaine. Dans ce texte on examine et les oeuvres de base de ce domaine et celles qu’on ne qualifie pas nécessairement d’histoire intellectuelle ni culturelle mais qui éclairent, quand même, le sujet en discutant un aspect quelconque des idées politiques ou sociales ou de la culture pour contribuer ainsi aux recherches sur l’histoire intellectuelle ou culturelle des Prairies.
