Abstract

Abstract:

This analysis of feminist writings in religious studies in Canada starts by taking into account the social conditions in which they appear: a sharp increase in the number of female students, a dearth of women teaching in the discipline, the influence of American women researchers, and the alignment with a social movement. There follows a review of the methodological resources involved: Québécois and Canadian theologians draw mainly on women’s experience in criticizing and denouncing a patriarchal tradition and in developing their creativity in different modes of discourse. The main themes come either from within a universal context, dealing with the question of God, or from Canada and Québec, dealing with the worship of the Virgin Mary, women’s religious communities, ethical aspects of family life and the power of the church. The main writings analyzed are those of Anita Caron, Pamela Dickey Young, Micheline Dumont, Olivette Genest, Naomi R. Goldenberg, Elisabeth J. Lacelle, Ellen Leonard, Marie-Andrée Roy.
