‘Painting Above Paint’: Telling Li(v)es in Emily Carr’s Literary Self-Portraits

Although best known as a painter, Emily Carr was also the author of a number of autobiographical works in prose. In this paper I examine charges against her which claim that she was at best careless with facts and at worst a liar. My argument is that a careful look at the truth standards of the genres in which she wrote, making full use of contemporary autobiographical theory, demonstrates that she has produced authentic self-portraits.

Emily Carr, bien qu’on la connaisse le mieux comme peintre, fut également l’auteur de nombre d’écrits autobiographiques en prose. Je propose d’évaluer dans cet article des accusations dans lesquelles on prétend, au mieux, qu’elle maniait insouciamment les faits et, au pire, qu’elle mentait. La thèse que je propose est qu’une revue attentive des normes de la véridicité des genres dans lesquels elle s’exprimait, tout en exploitant pleinement la théorie autobiographique contemporaine, confirme qu’elle a réalisé des auto-portraits authentiques.
