  • Coco Chanel Said . . .
  • Gigi Chi Ying Lam (bio)

A piece for soprano, double bass, and piano.

Coco Chanel, one of the premier fashion designers in Paris, created a revolution in the fashion world by liberating women from the tight and heavy clothes of the nineteenth century. Her act created anger within male designer circles.

This piece uses one of Coco Chanel’s famous quotes as a theme to connect the whole piece together: “Fashion has become a joke. The designers have forgotten that there are women inside the dresses. Most women dress for men and want to be admired. But they must also be able to move, to get into a car without bursting their seams! Clothes must have a natural shape.”

This piece is dedicated to pioneer women in both fashion and music history. Thank you to all the fearless pioneers who have paved the way for women in the modern world. [End Page 169]
