“The Dust of Toryism”: Monarchism and Republicanism in Upper Canadian Travel and Immigration Texts

This essay analyzes a representative sample of travel and immigration texts set in Upper Canada, from to , for the struggle played out within them between images of republicanism and monarchism. It identifies a pervasive fear in these writers of the contamination of the colony with principles and behaviour entirely contrary to its British origins. The construction of the colony these texts attempt was rife with the possibilities of transculturation through their delivery of the discourse of republicanism to the British reading public.

Dans cette étude nous analyserons un échantillon représentatif de textes, allant de à , portant sur les voyages et l’immigration dans la colonie du Haut Canada. Ces textes témoignent du conflit entre les images d’un régime républicain et celles d’une Monarchie. Ils identifient aussi la crainte omniprésente, chez ces écrivains, d’une contamination de la colonie par des principes et des moeurs contraires aux britanniques de la colonie. Ces textes représentent par l’entremise d’un discours républicain une colonie pleine d’un potential transculturel à un public de lecteurs britanniques.
