Are Some Countries More Postmodern Than Others?: Some Observations From Recent Canadian Experience

For the time being the constitutional debate is over. In this paper, the author uses the respite to reflect on certain aspects of the debate in light of recent developments in postmodern thought. In doing so, two key concepts used in discussions about the nature of Canada — those of “language” and of “nation” are analyzed. In the course of the paper, postmodernism’s possible contribution is evaluated and found wanting.

Le débat constitutionnel est clos pour le moment. Dans cet article nous profitons de ce répit pour réfléchir à certains aspects du débat à la lumière de développements récents dans la pensée postmoderne. Pour ce faire, nous analyserons deux concepts clé utilisés dans les discussions sur la nature du Canada: celui de “langage” et celui de “nation.” Nous évaluerons aussi, tout au long de cet article, la contribution postmoderniste et ses lacunes.
