Massimo Mila, the Prismatic Intellectual: An Archival Case Study

English Abstract:

This article presents a case study focusing on the archives of the Massimo Mila Collection housed at the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basle. Mila (1910–1988) was one of the great intellectuals of the twentieth century and an influential figure in Italian musical and cultural life. He was a music critic and historian, a multi-faceted and culturally engaged character. After a short profile of Mila and a description of his collection, the article focuses on its most important part, namely the large amount of letters from over 600 correspondents, including musicians, painters, art and music critics, philosophers, historians, political activists, important members of the government, and numerous intellectuals from Italy and abroad. It is mostly unpublished material, with a few exceptions. My research selects all the letters that dates from 1928 to 1956, that is, from Mila's debut as a music critic when he was just eighteen, until around age forty-five, when he was already a well-known and established figure in the world of Italian culture. The rise of Fascism, the birth of the Republic, and the first phase of reconstruction made this a period of immense upheaval for Italy and many other European nations.

The study aims to underline the immense potential of research carried out on the Massimo Mila Collection, as well as contribute to shedding further light on the wealth of interests and intellectual relationships of a figure who could quite simply be defined as "Mila the prismatic intellectual".

Cet article présente une étude cas centrée sur les archives de la collection Massimo Mila, conservée à la fondation Paul Sacher de Bâle. Mila (1910–1988), fut un grand intellectuel du 20e siècle, et une personnalité influente dans la vie musicale et culturelle en Italie. Il fut critique et historien de la musique, personnage aux multiples facettes, et engagé culturellement. Après avoir décrit le personnage de Mila et sa collection, l'article se concentre sur le large volume de lettres issues de plus de 600 correspondants, dont des musiciens, peintres, critiques d'art et de musique, philosophes, historiens, militants politiques, d'importants membres du gouvernement, ainsi que de nombreux intellectuels italiens et étrangers. Il s'agit pour la plupart, de matériels inédits (sauf rares exceptions). Mes recherches consistent en une sélection de courriers datant de 1928 à 1956, c'est à dire des débuts de Mila en tant que critique musical, alors qu'il n'avait que 18 ans, jusqu'à environ 45 ans lorsqu'il fut déjà reconnu comme une personnalité du monde de la culture italienne. La montée du fascisme, la naissance de la République et la 1re phase de reconstruction en ont fait période d'immense révolte pour l'Italie et pour beaucoup d'autres pays européens.

Cette étude a pour but de souligner le potentiel important de recherche sur la collection Massimo Mila, ainsi que d'apporter un éclairage sur la richesse d'intérêts et des relations intellectuelles d'un personnage qui pourrait simplement être défini comme « Mila l'intellectuel spectral ».

Dieser Artikel präsentiert eine Fallstudie über das Archiv der Sammlung Massimo Mila, die in der Paul-Sacher-Stiftung in Basel aufbewahrt wird. Mila (1910–1988) war einer der großen Intellektuellen des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts und eine einflussreiche Figur im italienischen Musikund Kulturleben. Er war Musikkritiker und Historiker, ein vielseitiger und kulturell engagierter Charakter. Nach einer kurzen Vorstellung Milas und einer Beschreibung seiner Sammlung konzentriert sich der Artikel auf deren wichtigsten Teil, nämlich die große Anzahl von Briefen von über 600 Adressaten, darunter Musiker, Maler, Kunst- und Musikkritiker, Philosophen, Historiker, politischer Aktivisten, wichtiger Regierungsmitglieder sowie zahlreiche Intellektuelle aus Italien und dem Ausland. Es handelt sich–bis auf einige Ausnahmen–um unpubliziertes Material. Meine Forschung umfasst alle Briefe aus der Zeit von 1928 bis 1956, also von Milas Anfängen als Musikkritiker mit gerade einmal 18 Jahren bis zu einem Alter von 45 Jahren als weit bekannte und etablierte Person der italienischen Kultur. Der Aufstieg des Faschismus, die Geburt der Republik und die erste Phase des Wiederaufbaus prägen diesen Zeitraum in Italien und vielen anderen europäischen Ländern als ungemein bewegt.

Die Studie zielt darauf ab, das riesige Forschungspotential zu unterstreichen, das an der Sammlung Massimo Mila vollbracht wurde. Zudem soll ein Beitrag geleistet werden, die breit gestreuten Interessen und intellektuellen Beziehungen einer Person ins Licht zu rücken, die schlicht definiert werden kann als "Mila, der prismatische Intellektuelle".
