Abstract

English Abstract:

Computer technology has provided us with new research tools that permit us to compare individual books of the same title with far greater ease and to determine the identity of each copy with a higher degree of accuracy than was previously possible. While inspecting hundreds of exemplars of printed editions with music for the project "Early music printing in German speaking lands", we were faced with the problem that many of the copies previously related to a single edition were different in subtle ways. In order to assign individual copies to specific editions, we reconstructed the printing process and defined indicators of identity that distinguish between variants, different states and variant editions (or issues). The difficulties we had to resolve are illustrated in the present paper in three specific examples: a music theory book, a grammar book and a motet anthology.
