Abstract

Challenging behavior is common in children and youth with genetic syndromes and severe disability. After 28 years of having a son with CHARGE syndrome, and becoming an expert on the behavioral issues, I realized that the tools I use to consult on challenging behavior are very Adlerian. This article discusses the courage to be imperfect, the psychology of use, the purposiveness of behavior, the goals of misbehavior, and the life tasks as useful to understanding these behaviors.
