Abstract

The aim of this paper, which focuses on the theatres at Caesarea and Beth Shean (Schythopolis) is threefold. Firstly, the theatres are situated in their historical context. Subsequently, with the aid of publications written by various archaeologists, the architectural form and characteristics of each theatre are described. Finally, the contemporary use of the two theatres, in the context of Israeli theatrical events is reviewed and two points, concerning the issue of the contemporary use of ancient theatres, are raised, namely the lack of dramatic materials, and the way festivals are perceived by the local populations.
