In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

  • Editor's Preface
  • Angeliki Tzanetou

It is with great pleasure that we present to our readers another volume of Illinois Classical Studies, the first of the two issues published annually. The first part of this issue features articles that cover a selection of Greek and Latin authors, symmetrically distributed across the genres of epic, historiography, and oratory. The second part showcases a Special Section on "Wet-Nursing and Breastfeeding in Greece and Rome," guest-edited by Toph Marshall, that inspired the choice of this issue's cover image of the Hellenistic baby-feeder from Campania on exhibit at the Workman Gallery of Ancient Mediterranean Cultures at the Spurlock Museum. The journal accepts on-line submissions through the Open Journal system (http://www.press.uillinois.edu/journals/ics.html); all submissions are then reviewed by two anonymous referees. ICS is also available on J-STOR and on Project Muse, both in the archives and the current scholarship.

I would like to thank all authors of the articles, as well as the authors of all submitted papers to our journal and I am grateful to the anonymous reviewers who provided constructive reports, even when these entailed a negative response to the author. In addition to the Guest Editor of the Special Section, I would like to thank Antony Augoustakis, Head of the Classics Department, as well as the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Associate Dean Martin Camargo for their continuing support. Thanks are due especially to Clydette Wantland, Kristen Dean-Grossmann, and the team at the University of Illinois Press for all their help and guidance. My editorial assistant for ICS 42.1, Aine McVey, deserves warm thanks for her substantial contribution and help with the production of this volume.
