Giuseppe Fornari once said to me, "a strong theory produces strong responses."

Benoît Chantre's review in Volume 23 of the reception in French to René Girard's work credited Eric Gans with initiating an important bilingual dialog. So we begin Volume 24 there, with Trevor Cribben Merrill's translation of "Pour une esthétique triangulaire" from the issue of Critique featuring Girard. Thanks to Eric for letting us publish it and for giving us a short explanation of its place in his own work.

I appreciate the continued support of the journal by the Department of English, The College of Arts and Letters, and Michigan State University, and the constant supply of submissions with such wide-ranging interests. [End Page v]
