The Obama administration attempted to build its Rebalance in Southeast Asia on three pillars: economic statecraft, military-security relations, and multilateral diplomacy. The failure of the first and the limited success of the second and third pillars leave ample room for President Trump to make his mark on US policy in Southeast Asia. This article examines the implementation of the Obama administration’s policies and offers policy prescriptions for the incoming Trump administration to build on Obama’s legacy.
