Music Industry Data (Music ID), previously known as Academic Charts Online: International Popular Music, has been available since 2012 and compiles charting data from Billboard, Official Chart Company, GfK Entertainment and 30 other agencies worldwide (Music Industry Data,, accessed 9 January 2017). Music ID Incorporates sales data starting in the 1950s through the present and includes updated weekly coverage of America, Europe and Asia.


Music ID provides the user with two options to begin their search via a keyword or date. When one enters an artist’s or band’s name as a keyword entry a list of results appear with corresponding countries where the artist/band appeared on the charts. For [End Page 765] instance, entering the search term “Bon Jovi” will return a variety of options one of which provides the result of “Bon Jovi (US, GB, AU, ES, DE, CA, CH, AT, SE, JP, AR, BG, BR, CN, DR, FI, FR, GR, IE, IT, NO, NZ, PT, TW). Items in parentheses are countries where albums charted (Music Industry Data, Advanced Search,, accessed 9 January 2017).

Selecting an option and clicking Next will lead to the charting data for the desired artist/band. Partial searches (in this case “bon”) will result in a longer list with Bon Jovi resulting further down, but for some other bands a partial search (i.e. “dura” for Duran Duran) will not retrieve the desired results. Searching via the date search allows the user to enter a particular date, country, and chart (i.e. January 4, 1984, United States, Billboard top 100) and receive the top ten albums for that day and their relative rankings/information. An advanced search for an artist/band provides the user with the ability to search by specific albums, singles, date and additional keywords.

Having selected an artist the first thing that appears to the user is the sales ranking graph. The sales ranking graph derives from the albums selected below (which defaults to the top three results) and can provide a variety of views from one month, three months, six months, one year, year-to-date, and all dates. Within the graph one can select a particular year and obtain information about world events which contributes to the interdisciplinary nature of this database. The world event link opens separately and contains a summary of sporting news, entertainment, world events and achievements such as the Nobel Prize, and notable deaths.

Returning to the sales ranking graph which is exportable and collapsible, one can see other relevant information for the artist/band such as that contained within the bio panel. The bio panel details the albums, chart positions, countries and the charts detailed in the sales ranking graph. From here the user can opt to see which chart, which country, or all selections, as well as listen to a song track.

Music ID also links in journal articles related to the artists, but currently there is an extra step to accessing these articles. Once the user has collapsed the sales ranking graph and can easily see the bio panel one can click on the artist’s/band’s name within the Artist column. This will reload the screen with the journal links now present within the bio panel.

The only other drawback with the journals is that Cambridge has updated their URL link so the user will have to re-enter their search term for those journals. The Academic Rights Press developers are aware of this development and are working to address this extra step.

Should a user be interested in learning more about the chart progress of an individual album by the artist/band the album titles are hyperlinked and will lead to a new sales ranking graph that contains just information...
