Summary:
Newman over 100 years ago was forced already to combat an exaggerated view of “utility” in education, which would have denied any utility to the study of the humanities. The practical value of the latter is however that it contributes to the health of the mind, which is itself as great a good as the health of the body, and that it thus raises the intellectual level of society.
