290 A NEW ACQUISITION AT THE ROYAL ONTARIO MUSEUM The Royal Ontario Museum has recently received a very generous gift from Dr. EI ie Borowski. This consists of thirteen panels of mosaic pavement. These panels are probably from the nave of a church and in style suggest an origin in Syria, of the fourth or fifth century. The exact relationship of the different panels, however, is not clear. Some contain animals and birds, five of them have inscriptions. The example shown in Plate 1 is quite unique in that it appears to show a donkey standing on a mosaic floor, i.:.!. a mosaic of a mosaic! The panels are now being con sol idated and prepared for exhibition, with a target date of spring 1985. As is well known to archaeologists throughout Canada, it is highly unl ikely that any other North American Museum will be able to offer thirteen new panels of mosaic in the foreseeable future. When they can be displayed these mosaics will provide very useful teaching material both for students and the general public.
