“Clouds. Kathryn Cowles. Acrylic on canvas. 2013”: This is an ekphrastic poem in the tradition of Homer’s descriptions of Achilles’s shield in which the described artwork seems to contain movement and narrative. It starts out as a painting of a woman in her apartment, swoops out through the city block and cityscape and into the sky and ends as a painting of people flying in airplanes through clouds. The title takes the form of a museum placard.
