Abstract

ABSTRACT:

A regular feature in Inks, “From the Archives” seeks to present rare and historically significant comics materials from archives and private collections, with the aim of encouraging further research or teaching of related materials or topics. This issue we present extremely a gallery drawn from fanzines from the early 1960s, featuring art by Jay Lynch, Skip Williamson, and Art Spiegelman—cartoonists who would go on and help found the underground comix movement later in the decade. The introduction to the “Archives” puts these amateur publications in the context of the history of fanzines, amateur printing technologies, and the broader history of comics in the years between the Comics Code of 1954 and the start of the underground comix movement in the second half of the 1960s.
