Abstract

The 1995 season of the University of Manitoba excavation at Eleusis uncovered three main strata. The upper stratum is Roman and comprises the remainder of the cement floor of the 1994 season and a large rectangular cistern. The second stratum is Classical and consists of house walls and a floor dating to the fifth century B.C. The third stratum dates to the Bronze Age and contains rich deposits of the Early, Middle and Late Helladic periods. It should be noted that this is the first time that stratified Early Helladic pottery has been found at Eleusis. The excavation also produced a wealth of faunal and botanical finds that will be used for the study of the economy of ancient Eleusis. In addition to the excavation, a geophysical survey of the southwestern slope of the hill was also conducted to identify subsurface cultural remains.
