mira lloyd dock

Mira Lloyd Dock (1853–1945) was honored October 13, 2016, by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. DCNR renamed their Penn Nursery just south of State College on Route 322 the Mira Lloyd Dock Resource Conservation Center. The nursery grows tree seedlings for planting in state parks and forests. Dock was the first woman hired for a state government leadership position on the State Forestry Reservation Commission in 1901. As a commission member, she traveled the state seeking areas forsaken by lumber interests that the state could purchase and reclaim for new forests. These lands are now part of our state parks, forests, and game lands. She advocated the planting of tree seedlings around the commonwealth, especially white pine. Dock is also known for catalyzing the “City Beautiful” Movement in Harrisburg in the early twentieth century. Speakers included DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn and Dr. Susan Rimby, author of a recent biography of Dock. [End Page 284]
