Call for Papers

When he was asked if deconstruction was the psychoanalysis of philosophy, Derrida answered “no.” He explained that although the two discourses share some vocabulary, Freud’s concepts were anchored to the metaphysics of presence, while deconstruction was developed as a challenge to such metaphysics. Nonetheless, the fact that deconstruction shares vocabulary with psychoanalysis is a symptom of shared preoccupations: the necessity to critique the sociopolitical realm in terms of the painful effects of repression on the socially undesirable; to attend to the historical character of communities and culture; to unveil the violence in discourse; to think the nonlinear temporality of history. Moreover, on more than one occasion, Derrida discussed the way Freud’s work is essential to thinking the political, the historical, the sociohistorical, and the possibility of the future as avenir. In this vein, for our next issue we are looking for papers that engage with this dialogue between psychoanalysis, deconstruction, and the political. The deadline for submissions is July 1, 2017.
