Abstract

Amara Tabor-Smith is an Oakland, CA–based performer/sometimes poet/dancemaker/sisterwoman who describes her work as Afro Futurist Conjure Art. Her dance-making practice utilizes Yoruba spiritual ritual to address issues of social and environmental justice, community, gender identity, and belonging. She is Artistic Director of Deep Waters Dance Theater, and is a recipient, with Ellen Sebastian Chang, of a 2016 Creative Capital Grant. She teaches dance in the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies at University of California, Berkeley. www.deepwatersdance.com
