Abstract

Harvey Cox views the free market as its own autonomous religion, a bewildering system of codes and myths that steers the behaviors of its adherents. In his recent book, The Market as God, Harvey Cox sets out to demonstrate that this religion is as comprehensive as any major faith. How we got from John Winthrop to Joel Osteen is the subject of Chris Lehmann’s new book, The Money Cult: Capitalism, Christianity, and the Unmaking of the American Dream. Lehmann is interested in how the commuitarian spirit of mainline Protestantism was eventually tarnished by the logic of private enterprise.

Barrett Swanson reviews The Market as God by Harvey Cox and The Money Cult: Capitalism, Christianity, and the Unmaking of the American Dream by Chris Lehmann.
