Abstract

In Cure: A Journey into the Science of Mind Over Body (2016), Jo Marchant addresses strategies including the placebo effect, hypnosis, meditation, biofeedback, and religious healing, based on the literature and interviews with patients and providers. She seeks a middle ground of acceptance and healthy skepticism. The persistent mind-body split, and discomfort with uncertainty, may explain the continued resistance in medicine and society to these approaches to healing. The increasing amount of harm attributable to conventional medicine may further bolster Marchant’s analysis.
