What are we (not) studying when we study the reception of Cervantes? Is reception a form of interpretation or representation? Are Reception Studies the new way for interdisciplinary research? Is reception of literature the substitute for literary theory and criticism? This article addresses these questions by considering the challenging legacy of the aesthetic of reception of Hans Robert Jauss, and its methodological evolution into the history of reception within Cervantes Studies.
