Cart, Michael Young Adult Literature: From Romance to Realism. 3rd ed. ALA Neal-Schuman, 2016 310p
Paper ed. ISBN 978-0-8389-1462-5 $68.00

Cart’s expanded revision of his influential text is divided into two parts, “That Was Then” and “This Is Now.” The first gives an overview of the history of YA lit from the ’60s to the late ’90s and early aughts, while the second section features a variety of new material, including Cart’s assessment of the trend of the adult and “New Adult” readers of YA; the status of YA’s diversity and multiculturalism; the impact of changing demographics on readership and new literacies; and the return to realism as the most popular genre in young adult literature. As with previous editions, Cart pulls from a host of sources, including interviews with publishers, librarians, and academics. A bibliography and index are included.
