Abstract

The keynote address of the symposium examining Nabokov’s take on translation held in 2016 at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the text discusses Nabokov’s theory of translation with reference to Greek philosophy and 20th-century translation theory. It is particularly interested in the ethical implications of translation as the negotiation of cultural difference, and the way in which such negotiation figures in Nabokov’s work as a translator.
