29 ASHE ANNOUNCEMENTS Board of Directors Elected Four new Board members were elected in early 1980 and were installed during the Annual Meeting of the ASHE in March. They are: Joseph F. Kauffman, Professor, Educational Administration (Higher Educa­ tion) University of Wisconsin-Madison. Professor Kauffman serves as the Program Chairperson for the 1981 Annual Meeting and President-Elect of the Association. Larry L. Leslie, Professor and Acting Director, Center for the Study of Higher Education, University of Arizona. Two year term. Ann I. Morey, Associate for Academic Programs, Office of the Chancellor of the California State University and Colleges. Two year term. Joyce D. Marlier, Research Assistant, Center for the Study of Higher Ed­ ucation, The Pennsylvania State University. Student member, two years. Outgoing members of the Board who completed their terms include, Bob Berdahl, SUNY-Buffalo (past President of ASHE); Zelda Gamson, University of Michigan; Jim Morrison, North Carolina-Chapel Hill; Martha Turnage, George Mason University (student member). All of these persons have served the As­ sociation with dedication and energy. We are grateful for their services and wish them well. Dissertation of the Year Award Winners Two winners were selected from among the 53 nominees for the Outstanding Dissertation Award. They were: Dr. Elaine R. DiBiase: "Classical Tenure and Contemporary Alternatives: Academe's Principles and Court Decisions." Professor William Toombs of Penn State University was the thesis advisor and the faculty nominator. Dr. William M. Zumeta: "The State and Doctoral Programs at the Univer­ sity of California: Academic Planning for an Uncertain Future." Pro­ fessor Martin Trow of University of California-Berkeley was the thesis advisor and the faculty nominator. Three other dissertations were among the five finalists. Their work was regarded highly enough that Jossey-Bass made a substantial award of free books. These persons, dissertation titles, and advisors were: Dr. Marie E. Childers: "Academic Decision-Making Structure;" Robert H. Schaf fer, Indiana University, advisor. Dr. Debra Herman : "The Vassar Experiment in Women's Education, 18611924 ;" Carl N. Degler, Stanford University, advisor. Dr. Glenda M. Lawhorn: "Black Administrators in Predominantly White In­ stitutions of Higher Learning: Their Self-Concept, Personal Values and Achievement Motivation;” Charles M. Stanton, Saint Louis University, advisor. 30 Members of the review committee who selected the finalists and the win­ ners were: Robert Cope, University of Washington, Chair Kenneth Feldman, State University of New York— Stony Brook Lyman Glenny, University of California— Berkeley Wayne Kirschling, Indiana Higher Education Commission Eileen Kuhns, Catholic University Haorld Wechsler, University of Chicago New Editor of the RHE Named Last year the current Editor, Sam Kellams, indicated that he would not be seeking a second three-year term as Editor of the RHE. Accordingly, the Pub­ lications Committee, chaired by James Morrison, was charged with conducting a search for a new Editor. Joining Jim Morrison on this committee were Mary Corcoran, Arthur Chickering, Philip Altbach, Larry Leslie, Robert Silverman, Mike Olivas, Helen Warren, Robert Blackburn, Cameron Fincher, and Jonathan Fife. Originally, twelve colleagues responded to the call for nominations for Editor. Five withdrew their names leaving seven candidates to be seriously considered by the committee. The Committee recommended and the Board of Directors approved Dr. John C. Smart of the University of Kentucky as the new Editor of the RHE for a three-year term. The responsibility for the RHE ends for Sam Kellams with this issue. The fall issue (Vol. 4, #1) will be handled by John Smart.
