Studies of the Biglan model have now expanded to a point where a summary of the research findings is needed to guide future empirical investigations. The Biglan model classifies thirty-five academic departments according to their hard–soft, pure–applied, and life—non-life character and then arranging the areas into 2×2×2 table with eight categories. Studies of the model have examined the differences among these categories in terms of faculty teaching, research and service. This paper discusses the elements of the model and its use as a classification scheme. Next, the validation tests of the Biglan model arc reviewed and the theoretical implications and practical applications of the model arc discussed. Finally, several lines of inquiry for future research about the model are suggested.
