This research examined the effect of contractual protection for traditional faculty governance structures on unionized campuses. Although senates and unions maintained separate formal governance structures and addressed different areas of institutional policy, substantial overlap in leadership of the two systems was evident. The two systems had strong informal linkages and ceded some of their legitimate power in order to facilitate the governance process.
