Abstract

This article examines the possibility of redesigning the work experiences of faculty members in an effort to enhance their motivation, productivity, and personal and work satisfactions. One particular approach to work redesign, Job Characteristics Theory, is described in detail. Based on this theory, several specific strategies that might be used to redesign faculty jobs are discussed. The article concludes with a discussion of methods for supporting and managing newly designed faculty jobs.
