On the assumption that a dispassionate understanding of the sources of male-female status differentials provide a surer guide to equity-oriented policy, this essay identifies five alternative explanations of the differential status of academic women and brings the weight of extant empirical evidence from a large number of studies to bear in testing the relative power of each.
