This article presents a descriptive profile of doctoral programs for the study of higher education in the United States. It describes program goals, purposes, and objectives; curriculum and degree offerings; organizational structure; faculty and student characteristics; and admissions and degree requirements in 72 doctoral programs. Although the emphasis is on description rather than evaluation or quality assessment, the information should prove useful to those concerned with the development of higher education as a field of study.
