The author develops a conceptualization of teaching that not only builds upon previous research, but also incorporates some of the major claims from contemporary research on effective teaching. To begin conceptualizing teaching, we must focus on the teaching setting, which needs five general qualities to be effective: active engagement, decentralized management, orderly instructional practice, setting evolution, and summative evaluation.
