This paper reports a study of gender disparities in the rank and salary of male and female academics using the perspective of causal modeling, rather than the more common human capital and structural/functionalism theories. Using this approach, the author found, alarmingly, that gender is more important to faculty members’ academic rank and salary than the type of institution in which they work, their academic disipline, or the nature of their work.
