Located amid huge and complex commuter student populations, metropolitan institutions play a central role in the American learning society. This paper examines collectivities of these institutions—called urban postsecondary systems (UPSs). The discussion identifies fundamental properties of large UPSs, frames critical policy questions, and demonstrates the utility of the UPS as a unit of analysis.
