Abstract

This review essay explores Brint and Karabel’s (1989) use of an institutional model to explain why community colleges moved from predominantly transfer institutions to predominantly vocational institutions, thereby diverting the dreams of students who hoped community college would be their doorway to equal educational opportunity. Vaughan suggests that Brint and Karabel overlooked additional forces that moved the community college into vocational education and that this movement was necessary to fulfill the community college’s ever-broadening comprehensive mission.
