Abstract

This paper applies the Hegelian model of society as an organism to the analysis of what makes multicultural societies healthy or unhealthy, how to make the transition from one to the other, and potential roles for educational and political systems in that process. Because of its broad base and assignment to transmit culture, universities may need to make a greater contribution to cultural realignment in an unhealthy multicultural society with a tradition of political polarization than in either a healthy multicultural society or in an unhealthy multicultural society with a capacity for conventional political solutions.
