Abstract

The New American Poetry: Fifty Years Later reassesses Donald Allen’s instrumental 1960 anthology The New American Poetry. This collection of retrospective essays, edited by John R. Woznicki, probes the conditions of the anthology’s publication, the influence of earlier modernist precursors on its formation, the relationships between its leading contributors, and the cultural legacy of the New American Poets in the contemporary moment. Together, this volume can be described as an investigation of the practice of tradition building to elucidate why Allen’s work has remained so vital for contemporary poets, readers, and scholars of innovative writing.
