242 / Journal of Daoist Studies 5 (2012) Research Projects Documentary Video Under funding from the Rasmussen Foundation and Orient Raise Inter‑ national Trading Limited, our team will be in China during the summer of 2012 to complete a documentary entitled “In the Mountains of Far Off Gushe, There Lives a Spirit Man.” This is a 75‑minute documentary tell‑ ing the story of the spiritual experiences of Daoist masters at several of the most beautiful and sacred Daoist caves sites on mountains in China to air on the Documentary Channel in the U.S. —Ronnie Littlejohn Hunan Holy Places The Grotto‑Heaven (dongtian 洞天) and Auspicious Lands (fudi 福地) are numinous natural and historical sites, playing a cornerstone role in Dao‑ ist geography and ecology. 7 out of the 36 Lesser Grotto‑Heavens (da dongtian 大洞天) and 12 out of the 72 Auspicious Lands are situated in Hunan province. This section presents a map and a table first aiming at locating these sites, drawing from Fransiscus Verellen, “The beyond‑ within: Grotto‑Heavens (dongtian 洞天) in Taoist ritual and cosmology, Cahiers d’Extrême‑Asie 8 (1995), 265‑290; and from Liu Guoqiang 刘囯強, “Hunan shiba dongtian fudi kao” 湖南十八洞天福地考, in Daojiao yu Nanyue 道教与南岳 (2003), 242‑62. Second, the identities of these sites have been reinvented in the re‑ cent decades, through their integration in the modern categories of Heri‑ tage, Nature and Travel. The tables also indicate the status of the territo‑ ries where they are embedded in. Most of them are situated in (National or Provincial Rank) Famous and Splendid Landscape Zones (国家/省) 风 景名胜区; National Rank Tourism Zones 国家级旅游区, ranks 3A to 5A; or National Forest Parks 国家森林公园. Some also became Urban Parks, Forest Farms, or have no official status.
