Abstract

Abstract:

How is a magazine different from a club? The “Idler’s Club” column, which ran in Jerome K. Jerome and Robert Barr’s monthly Idler from 1892 to 1901, provides a humorous twist on the longstanding relationship between clubs and periodicals. Explicitly positioning itself as New Journalism, the Idler addressed readers who were not members of the exclusive West End clubs the column evoked. This article argues that the Idler alluded to the idea of a men’s club to promote bonds of friendship but defined the magazine as a more inclusive social space.
