Abstract

Scotsman George Mackie designed books as a freelancer for Edinburgh University Press from the 1950s to the 1980s. The author first encountered Mackie’s work in the 1970s while he was design and production manager at the University of Texas Press, which distributed books published by Edinburgh University Press. The quotations by Mackie in this profile come from correspondence that the author had with Mackie and from the essay that Mackie wrote for a 1991 exhibition of his work. The images of Mackie’s designs featured herein were scanned from books in the author’s personal collection or were provided to the author by Mackie.
