abstract:
In this essay, Bruce Hindmarsh looks at evangelical participation in letter writing through the case study of John Wesley’s twenty-three years of correspondence with Ann Bolton, a lay leader of the local Methodist society. This well-documented example of epistolary spiritual direction exhibits the dynamic whereby the condition of spiritual simplicity was fostered through the familiar letter.
