Since the late 1990s, a language of “mutual cultural heritage” has gained popularity in the international conservation arena to describe the historical interactions between now-independent nations through past colonialism, trade, or other experiences of prolonged contact. This paper takes up such themes in relation to the Netherlands, examining the implications of such a discourse within the cultural branch of the country’s international aid programs.
