Abstract

Educators and students must reclaim the role that education has historically played in developing critical literacies and civic capacities. Critical pedagogy can inspire and energize, and challenge the growing number of antidemocratic practices and policies. As Transformations has been making clear for twenty-five years, pedagogy is a moral and political practice that is always implicated in power relations because it offers particular versions and visions of civic life, community, and the future. Democracy should be a way of thinking about education, and education can rescue democracy.
